This Black Forest Cake is very decadent and delicious. It is one of my favorite cakes of all time. This cake has layers of chocolate cake and is sweetened by light whipped cream and cherry filling.
Black Forest Cake is the famous German chocolate cake also known as “Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte.” The first time I tasted this cake was when I was in the Philippines. The first time I tasted it, I immediately fell in love with it. Frankly speaking, when I was living there, I always requested from my older brothers and sisters that they buy me my favorite black forest cake for my birthday.
Black Forest Cake is a very decadent cake but is so easy to create. While I make the cake from scratch, you can always buy the ready-made mix. With a few ingredients such as the cake mix, canned cherry filling, light whipped cream, and chocolate shavings, this cake can be made in no time.
Traditionally, this cake is for adults since it contains kirsch (a cherry liqueur). Since I am not a fan of liqueur or any alcoholic beverage and my daughter likes to eat cake (any kind of cake), I took this ingredient out when I made this cake.
This cake is truly divine. It is one of those cakes that you don’t necessarily see in parties but is one that you will fall in love once you have it.
So, without further ado, here is the recipe for the Black Forest Cake.
Heat oven to 350 degrees F. If using nonstick or coated pans, heat oven to 325 degrees F. Spray with baking spray with flour or grease two 8 or 9 inch round cake pans.
Bake cake as directed on the box. Once baked, cool for 10 minutes. Remove from pans and transfer to cooling rack. Completely cool cakes (about an hour).
In a bowl, beat the whipping cream and sugar using an electric mixer on high-speed until stiff peaks form. In another bowl, mix pie filling and vanilla extract. Set aside.
On a serving plate, place 1 cake layer. Spread with a third of the whipped cream and, then, 1 cup of cherry mixture on top of the cream and within 1 inch of edge. Place the 2nd cake layer on top. Spread the rest of the whipped cream on top and on the side to completely cover the cake.
Spread chocolate shavings on top and side. Top cake with cherries.
